San Francisco supervisor wants Zuckerberg's name removed from hospital: report

A supervisor in San Francisco on Tuesday urged the city's attorney to draft a bill to remove the name of Facebook's general manager, Mark Zuckerberg, from San Francisco's general hospital, which would change the way the city names its public institutions, reported The Mercury News.

The Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital was renamed in 2015 after Facebook's CEO and his wife Priscilla Chen donated $ 75 million. At the time, Facebook was perceived more favorably, but a series of recent controversies, including Cambridge Analytica and the company's hiring of a Republican-affiliated company to denigrate its critics, has brought down its political influence. .

Supervisor Aaron Peskin on Tuesday urged city prosecutor Dennis Herrera to draft a bill to remove Zuckerberg's name from the hospital, saying Facebook was no longer serving the public interest.

Peskin told The Times, "I really want the city to reevaluate the value of giving up these naming rights and the message that it sends to the role of guardian of public trust. More than mere rights to appoint, it is the integrity of the institutions and spaces that are largely funded by the public and exist to serve the public. "

In order for the bill to pass, lawmakers would allow the public 30 days to comment before the question is put to a vote. City officials still have to decide what to do with Zuckerberg's original donation if his name were to be removed from the hospital.
