SAN JOSE, Calif .– San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is under investigation after allegations he used a fake COVID-19 vaccination card, a source told Emily Kaplan of ESPN, confirming earlier information.
According to a source, the investigation is focused on whether Kane submitted a fraudulent vaccination card as well as the domestic assault allegations made by his ex-wife, Anna Kane, in the recent divorce filing. The NHL has started interviews on the case, and there is no timeline for the investigation to be completed.
It is not known if Anna Kane is participating in the investigation. She was not involved in the league’s recent investigation into whether Kane had played in NHL games, including some bets placed against the Sharks.
Using a fake vaccination card is illegal in the United States and Canada and is against NHL rules.
Kane was cleared last month from the aforementioned allegations that he bet on NHL games, and the league said it had found no evidence of this. Evander Kane has also been accused by Anna Kane of physical and sexual abuse. He denied these accusations through his lawyer.
With the process underway, Kane, who was not with the Sharks at the start of training camp, is staying away from the squad and squad facilities heading into the regular season. The rules for the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol are vague, but sources suggest the league would seek to suspend Kane if it is proven that he produced a fake vaccination card.
The Sharks start Oct. 16 against the Winnipeg Jets, and Kane, a high-priced veteran of a rebuilding team, will be missed. He finished with 22 goals and 27 assists in 56 games last season for a team that did not make the playoffs.
Kane, 30, has three seasons in a seven-year, $ 49 million contract. He’s in his third organization after being drafted and making his debut for Atlanta / Winnipeg, then a stint at Buffalo.
