Sanders pledges to name only the Supreme Court justices who support Roe v. Wade

"If you ask me if I would ever appoint a Supreme Court justice who does not believe in the defense of Roe vs. Wade, who does not believe that a woman has the right to control her own body, I do not will never do, "said Sanders. said on NBC "Meet the Press."

He also condemned a new Alabama law prohibiting abortion except in the event of a threat to the mother's life.

A number of presidential candidates have also stated that they would like Congress to pass a law setting out the rights enunciated in Roe v. Wade.

The debate over the issue was heated last week when Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey (right) signed the abortion ban. Earlier this month, Georgia's governor, Brian Kemp, signed a "heartbeat" abortion bill that would ban the procedure about six weeks after the start of the pregnancy. Other states have recently reviewed and passed laws restricting abortion rights.

Sanders and Gillibrand are among the two dozen who are fighting over the Democratic Party's presidential nomination for 2020.
