Bernie Sanders joined a group of critics on Friday who belittled Joe Biden for stating that he hoped to find a "ground of understanding" when drafting a policy aimed at fight against climate change.
Biden, the former vice president who runs Sanders in virtually every poll of Democratic presidential candidates for the 2020 presidency, has not yet commented on the Green New Deal presented by the senator from Vermont and by progressive democrats such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
After learning Friday of Biden's new centrist plan on climate change, Ocasio-Cortez made him aware of his opposition.
While the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of serious consequences for the planet if no immediate action was taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse, the United States, under the Chairmanship of Trump, turned away from international efforts to regulate carbon dioxide.
Biden said Friday that, like Sanders, he saw climate change as an "existential threat" and promised to unveil his own plan soon to cope with rising temperatures.
Many Republicans in Congress mocked the Green New Deal.
"There is not a single serious idea here," said Sen. Mike Lee during a speech to the Senate in March on the proposal. "Not one."
The main objective of the Green New Deal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States by 2030 by 2030, after the transition to clean and renewable sources of energy. Given that 80% of the country's energy currently comes from coal, oil or natural gas, this goal will be difficult.
The question for many riders in the Democratic realm is how to convince Republicans of the need to act quickly on climate change. A Gallup poll released in March only described 16% of Republicans as "concerned believers" in the face of climate change, while 77% of Democrats fall into this category.
To contribute to the adoption of significant legislation on climate change, the next president will help convince skeptics of Congress and the general public.
Sanders hopes the Green New Deal will focus on supporting blue-collar workers, but Bench seems to bet that he can do it with a plan that seems less radical.
