On Wednesday, Netflix released the first preview of the original black comedy series, “The Chair,” starring Sandra Oh in her last TV lead role following her Emmy-winning round in “Killing Eve.” She is also the executive producer of the project.
In “The Chair,” Oh plays Dr Ji-yoon Kim, who is tasked with chairing the prestigious English department at Pembroke University following a series of scandals. According to Netflix, Kim will face a “unique set of challenges” as the first woman to chair the department and one of the few staff of color across the university.
Pembroke and his English department are mostly run by old white men resistant to change – the very change Kim seeks to fight for. Throughout “The Chair,” Kim struggles to balance her new administrative responsibilities with parenting and her vision for her department. This struggle is exacerbated by the ongoing controversy around Kim’s department, for which she begins to realize that she could become a token scapegoat.
“I feel like someone handed me a time bomb because they want a woman to hold it when it explodes,” Kim says in the trailer.
Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Bob Balaban, Nana Mensah, David Morse and Everly Carganilla will be Oh’s colleagues, confidants and adversaries, along with Duplass, who played Josh Pfefferman in “Transparent,” as the controversial professor for whom Dr Kim appears to have feelings.
While “The Chair” appears to grapple with the lingering problem of racism, sexism, and the symbolism or exploitation of women of color, it’s a very fitting role for Oh, who has spoken openly about her experiences with the industry racism and misogyny as an Asian American woman. . Oh was nominated for 12 Emmy Awards and became the first Asian American woman to win the coveted award.
Amanda Peet is a writer, showrunner and executive producer of the series. Her husband, “Game of Thrones” co-creator David Benioff, and creative partner DB Weiss are also executive producers. This is their first project for Netflix after signing a deal with the streamer. “The Chair” is also produced by Bernie Caulfield (“The X Files”) and Daniel Gray Longino (“Portlandia”), who directs all six episodes.
“The Chair” will be released on August 20 on Netflix.
