The developed universe (Sandy) Alex G is filled with rebellious, misguided characters and outcasts used in the songs as warning tales; a drug dealer, a bad roommate, crushes with leathery hearts. For all that time, however, there has been this overwhelming feeling of trying to do better, to do right by his friends, his lovers, his dog Harvey. On "Gretel", its first track since 2017 Rocket and the first single of his next album House of sugarit is hard not to read these titles as a reference to Grimms' fairy tale about greed, misplaced, with Alex G serving as a narrator clinging desperately to reality. "Nobody is going to push me away," he sings, extremely serious.
"Gretel" also marks a return to the style of his previous recordings for the Philadelphia artist, dominated by an acoustic guitar and featuring a metal piano reminiscent of an organ. Whereas many Rocket As we felt like we were trying to create distance with the Auto-Tuned voice processing and the reverberant synthesizers, there is an intimacy in the progression chosen by the finger in the bridge, the swirling strings that accentuate the last third of the song. But "Gretel" still presents the hypnotic circuit that unites his writing, a deceptive sweetness in the way the impaired and accentuated vocals of the intro return to the weakened coda. Associated with the paranoid repetitions of his words, he seems ready to undo at any moment.
