‘Sanford and Son’ and ‘Barney Miller’ actor Gregory Sierra dies at 83

Originally from New York City, Sierra moved to California, pursuing a film and stage career that ultimately spanned five decades. His most important roles were in sitcoms of the 1970s.

In NBC’s “Sanford and Son”, he was a series regular as the Sanfords’ neighbor Julio Fuentes. He later portrayed Miguel “Chano” Amanguale, a detective on ABC “Barney Miller”.

Sierra has also had supporting or guest roles in “All in the Family”, “Hill Street Blues”, “Miami Vice” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”.

The film’s credits included “Under the Planet of the Apes”, “Butterfly” and “The Towering Inferno”.

Tabor called Sierra a “brilliant actor” and said he still received mail from his fans in the days following his death. His last credited acting role was in 2018. Tabor said he decided to retire because, while he still loved acting, he struggled to remember his lines.

Tabor said he was “the first person to help anyone who needed help and he really cared about people.”

Sierra is also survived by two stepdaughters and a step granddaughter, who Tabor says “loved her and called him ‘daddy.’
