49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday’s victory over the Rams that the team had been blinded by Santa Clara County’s new COVID-19 restrictions.
The county applauded Monday, issuing a statement claiming the 49ers were in the loop before the guidelines were announced.
“The dramatic increase in hospitalizations and the need for swift action to protect the community has evolved faster than anyone could have hoped,” Santa Clara County said in a statement, via Matt Maiocco of NBCSportsBayArea.com . “The 49ers are one of the thousands of organizations affected by our most recent actions. Santa Clara County has been in regular communication with the 49ers before and after the announcement of the revised mandatory guideline for all contact sports. We continue to do all we can to support the 49ers, as well as all local businesses, affected communities and families affected by the pandemic.
“It’s a team effort – COVID-19 affects every individual in the county in every industry and every business. With the surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, our priority is on hospitals and ensuring people can get the care they need, whether it’s because of COVID-19, a stroke, heart attack, or other trauma requiring hospitalization.
The 49ers will play their next two home games at State Farm Stadium, home of the rival Cardinals. They haven’t announced where they will train, but the 49ers may also train in Arizona.
The new measures require people entering the county to be quarantined for 14 days upon returning from a trip of more than 150 miles, so the 49ers are not allowed to train in Santa Clara and play elsewhere .
