Saquon Barkley ruled out with ankle injury in Giants’ nightmare

Saquon Barkley’s knee is no longer his main injury.

The Giants running back injured his ankle in the first quarter Sunday against the Cowboys and was quickly ruled out of the game. Head turned the other way, Barkley stepped on the foot of Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis as he slowed down on a Daniel Jones spill. Barkley then tripped over teammate Kadarius Toney and fell to the ground with his ankle in an awkward position.

Barkley, 24, limped off the field, sat on the bench for a few minutes and was loaded onto a cart to return to the locker room. He was initially deemed doubtful for his return, but that was quickly replaced by a pullout, which is usually a sign of a serious injury.

Jones was later ruled out himself after suffering a concussion.

Barkley’s new injury comes just as he looked like himself – a decisive reduced runner – on his return from last October’s surgery on an ACL tear and partially torn meniscus. Barkley missed 14 games last season and three games in 2019 with a sprained ankle and is now at risk of missing games for the third season in his four-year career.
