But it wasn’t until the group’s reincarnation in 1971 as the Labelle trio that things started to kick in. Eschewing the sophisticated glamor associated with girl groups at the time, Labelle switched to Afros and more funky wardrobes – and later to spacesuits – to open for bands like The Who and record songs more socially, sexually. and politically conscious ballad such as “Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood?” featuring Dash’s strong soprano as co-leader. All of this opened the door to Labelle’s greatest commercial success. with “Lady Marmalade” from their 1974 album Night birds. After the following albums Phoenix and Chameleon in 1975 and 1976, respectively, Labelle separated and Dash embarked on a solo career.

His self-titled 1978 debut album featured the Hot Dance Club’s top 10 songs, “Sinner Man,” which was also Dash’s only Billboard Hot 100 hit, reaching # 71 the following year. Three other solo albums followed: Ooh La La, Sarah Dash in 1980, Close enough in 1983 and You are all I need in 1988. Subsequent singles include “Ooh La La, Too Soon” (later used in an advertisement for Sassoon jeans) and the top 20 hits from the hit Hot Dance Club “Lucky Tonight”. Dash has also worked in session for the O’Jays, Chic’s Nile Rodgers, The Marshall Tucker Band and David Johansen. In the late ’80s and early’ 90s, Dash did work sessions, wrote songs, and toured with Keith Richards and hit the road as well. with the Rolling Stones.

After developing and touring with her own one-woman show, Dash of Diva, in the early 90s, Dash reunited with Hendryx and LaBelle for the # 1 dance hit “Turn It Out” from the 1995 soundtrack, To Wong Foo, thanks for everything! The trio reunited again in 2008 for the critically acclaimed reunion album Back to now (with the political song directed by Dash “System”), in collaboration with producers Lenny Kravitz, Wyclef Jean and Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff.
