Sarah Fuller’s historic season of Vanderbilt added another highlight on Sunday.
Fuller announced on Twitter that she takes part in the presidential inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday, calling it “an honor to be invited to participate in one of the great American traditions”.
She is expected to speak at the inauguration of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who will become the first female Vice President in American history. Fuller recorded a video for the inauguration last week at Vanderbilt Football Stadium.
“This historic inauguration is especially meaningful for American women and girls,” Fuller said on Twitter. “Glass ceilings are shattering and it’s time to #LeadLikeAWoman.”
Fuller became the first kicker to participate and score a point in a Power 5 college football game last season. Fuller is the starting goaltender for the Vanderbilt women’s football team, and she was called to action after COVID-19 issues wiped out Vanderbilt specialists.
She executed a squib kick in Vanderbilt’s game against Missouri and scored two more points in a loss to Tennessee. The moments have transcended the sport, as she has become arguably the sport’s best-known player this season. Her story transcended college football fans and she received praise everywhere from LeBron James to Mia Hamm to thousands of young girls.
Fuller embraced her sudden fame and became a role model for countless young girls. She told Yahoo Sports last fall, “I love it so much, it’s so amazing. When I went to a game in college or watched older girls grow up, I felt the same and admired them. Now being a varsity athlete and being that inspiration is really cool.
Fuller’s story now reaches the biggest stage imaginable, as there will be tens of millions of eyeballs at Wednesday’s inauguration.
