The NFL announced the Super Bowl LV umpiring team on Tuesday.
Carl Cheffers was named the match referee. He refereed the Super Bowl LI and refereed 17 playoff games during his career.
Bottom judge Sarah Thomas will be part of the Cheffers team. Thomas will be the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl. She is also the first woman to officiate an NFL game.
“Sarah Thomas made history once again as the first official Super Bowl woman,” NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said in a statement. “His elite performance and commitment to excellence earned him the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah for this well deserved honor. “
Referee Fred Bryan, linesman Rusty Baynes, ground judge James Coleman, side judge Eugene Hall, back judge Dino Paganelli and replay manager Mike Wimmer make up the rest of the squad. Coleman joins Thomas in making his Super Bowl debut while the other officials will work in the game for the second time.
