Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to officiate at a Super Bowl next month, the NFL announced on Tuesday. Thomas will serve as a shore judge on Referee Carl Cheffers’ crew at Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida.
Thomas joined the NFL in 2015 as the first official woman on the court. The league assembles its team of Super Bowl umpires based on eligibility – a minimum of five years of experience is required – as well as in-season performance. She worked a total of four playoff games in six seasons with the league.
In a statement, Executive Vice President of NFL Football Operations Troy Vincent said, “Sarah Thomas has made history once again as the first female Super Bowl official. Her elite performances and her commitment to excellence has earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Kudos to Sarah for this well-deserved honor. “
Cheffers will be working his second Super Bowl in five seasons, having also served as a team manager for Super Bowl LI. Four other members of the squad – referee Fred Bryan, linesman Rusty Baynes, fullback Eugene Hall and fullback Dino Paganelli – have worked at least one Super Bowl. Field judge James Coleman will complete the crew.
