WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks is Steve Austin’s latest guest on the Broken skull sessions. In the interview, Banks discusses the four-month hiatus from WWE last year.
“AT Disposal chamber, I know how important this match was for Bayley, but at that point I was still slowly [going down] and not happy, ”Banks recalls.
Austin asked Banks what was going on during this time to cause the downward spiral.
“Depression,” Banks began. “The depression was taking over. My mind was taking over. My thoughts took over. This place was bigger than me. And I got really, really lost because for a good seven years I didn’t even hear my real name. I haven’t heard from Mercedes anymore. All I’ve heard is Sasha Banks, and traveling down the road we only have a day or two off.
“So I’m home, I can’t even see what my real hair looks like. All I see though purple hair everyday. There were so many things that were right – I let them control me. I let it take and I say to myself: “It’s too much” instead of saying: “You know what? All is well. Breathe. Everything is fine.’ [Laughs]”
In the end, this forced Banks to take a break before she completely lost who she was.
“I couldn’t even look at myself,” Banks said. “I didn’t even know who I was. How I was at work, how angry I was, how sad I was. I was not the person I dreamed of being.
“It hit the fan and I wanted to make sure I didn’t get lost. So I said, ‘You know what? I have to walk away and find myself and I have to be brave about it. And that was probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to do – ask to leave WWE.
Banks revealed that when she asked for a break, she spoke with Vince McMahon and he initially refused the request, offering her to think for 30 days.
“I asked to leave and Vince said ‘no’ to me,” Banks laughs. “He said no. He said I’ll give you 30 days to think about it. And I took over 30 days.”
Banks’ appearance on Steve Austin Broken skulls session is now on demand on the WWE Network. It will also air after tonight Disposal chamber PPV.
