Saturday night’s classified game between Duke and the State of Florida was postponed due to COVID concerns that surfaced on the FSU schedule on Friday night, sources told CBS Sports.
The ACC has yet to decide on a date for a potential makeup game. The postponement also calls into question Florida State’s scheduled game (5-2) on January 6 against Syracuse.
Hours earlier Friday night, Duke announced that coach Mike Krzyzewski was scheduled to miss the No.20 Blue Devils tilt to 18th Florida State after being exposed to an individual who tested positive for COVID-19. Duke flew to Tallahassee on Friday, but Krzyzewski did not travel with the team, in an effort to observe standard quarantine protocols.
Assistant head coach Jon Scheyer was supposed to serve as interim head coach for Saturday’s game. Here is Duke’s initial statement, ahead of the FSU news landing later on Friday night.
Duke was set to end a layoff of more than two weeks after the competition. This is just the team’s latest setback related to the pandemic, which so far has been mostly planning. Four of his games this season have been postponed or canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, most recently his December 29 game against Pitt, which was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Panthers program.
Duke (3-2) struggled to play without a conference and, most notably, canceled his non-conference games previously postponed to December while choosing not to reschedule them so players can spend time with their families over the holidays. . It was Duke’s worst start since the 1999-2000 season.
