A research study, entitled “Mental health, a national priority in the light of crises and disasters”, presented by researcher Nahid Al Naqbi, and supervised by Dr. Abdel Aziz Estiteh, professor of public policy analysis at the Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government, pointed out a set of facts related to mental health and mental illness in the Arab world. Globally, the study hailed the UAE’s launch of the first national mental health policy to promote mental health, with the aim of developing mental health services, organizing their work, and providing comprehensive and distinctive psychological services to all who need them.
The most striking of these facts are the following:
01 Mental illness is caused by many factors including genetic, biological, social and environmental.
02 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental or neurological disorders.
03 Mental disorders can be diagnosed and treated effectively.
04 Mental health is a low health priority and access to effective treatment is very limited.
05 More than 40% of countries in the world do not have a mental health policy.
06 More than 30% of countries in the world do not have a mental health program.
07 The mental health budget in countries around the world, less than 1% of their total health expenditure.
08 The UAE took care of mental health by launching its own strategy in 2015.
09 In May 2017, the Cabinet announced a national policy on mental health.
10 Mental health awareness can help improve the lives of many people.
