H1N1 flu has killed nine people in Morocco in one week, Health Minister Anas Dekali said on Saturday.
The media reported Wednesday the first death. Since then, disturbing rumors have circulated on social networking sites. The official record Thursday was five dead, announced the Ministry of Health.
In a statement to the Moroccan press agency, he stressed that "the epidemiological situation" remains "normal compared to previous years".
"Efforts are continuing to monitor any situation in a hospital," said government spokesman Mustafa al-Khaliji.
Swine flu is the common name for H1N1, a respiratory disease caused by contact with pigs and transmitted from person to person by inhalation.
In 2009, following the announcement of cases in the United States and Mexico, the World Health Organization issued a pandemic alert in 2010.
