The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that the six-day oral cholera vaccination campaign in Yemen had reached some 400,000 people, including about 65,000 children under five years in Aden (Dali) and Taiz (Yemen).
The UN agency said Thursday in a statement in Geneva that the campaign was operating where there are large numbers of suspected cases of cholera and cases of acute watery diarrhea,
She pointed out that in the first months of this year 2019, the number of cases of acute watery diarrhea reported had increased in more than 95% of Yemen's regions.
Between January and the end of July, there were approximately 536,000 suspected cases and 773 related deaths, with children under five accounting for one quarter of suspected cases.
Since April 2017, the cholera outbreak and acute watery diarrhea in Yemen have caused about 2 million suspected cases of cholera and 3,500 deaths, and nearly a third were children under five years old, of which 711, the WHO said.
WHO has confirmed that the cholera outbreak in Yemen remains the largest in the world and is working with UNICEF and all partners to control and prevent possible outbreaks.
