The Spanish Ministry of Health has issued an international warning about a Listeria outbreak throughout the country. The number of people infected increased to 150, one of whom died as a result of the disease.

Fearing that more than 80 million tourists will visit Spain each year, the ministry announced that it was investigating 523 suspected cases.

Most confirmed cases have been reported in the southern region of Andalusia, where a pig filling plant is linked to the epidemic, but there are others in Catalonia in the north -est, and more than 50 people are still treated at the hospital.

Listeria bacteria usually cause minor problems, but can be dangerous for pregnant and immunocompromised patients.

The ministry said it had sent warnings to the authorities of the European Union and the World Health Organization regarding this outbreak, which was confirmed Tuesday as being at the origin of the death of a 90 year old woman.

The ministry announced that the health authorities had inspected the plant, owned by Magrodis, based in Seville, after laboratory tests showed that a listeria had been found in one of its products . Since May 1, all products manufactured by the factory have been withdrawn from the market and the company has not responded to requests for comments.
