A study done at the University of Queens in Belfast, Northern Ireland, highlighted an error while preparing a rice-based dish posing a serious health risk.
The researchers said that adding water to the rice during cooking was not enough to remove a toxic substance, explaining that the roots of the rice plants spread to the water, which contains a high proportion of insect repellents, especially arsenic.
The consumption of rice in this case could, over time, cause very serious health problems for some people, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes or some forms of cancer, they said.
The researchers urged to soak the pearls for an entire night in 5 times more water, then wash them before cooking, which would save them 80% of the harmful substances.
