Nokia leads the Android update rankings

Nokia is leading the ranking of software updates and security for Android smartphones, according to a report from counterpoint research company.

The report shows that Nokia is the leading brand in terms of updating smartphones in terms of operating system updates and security updates.

The updates are a major concern when buying an Android device, and Google is trying to solve this problem by offering other solutions via Google Play services and initiatives, such as Project Treble and Project Mainline.

However, much of the responsibility rests with phone manufacturers to frequently send operating system and security updates.

The report shows how various manufacturers sent updates from the third quarter of 2018 to the second quarter of 2019.

Nokia is at the top of the rankings, with 96% of phones shipped last year on Android Pay 9.0, the remaining 4% running Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Korean giant Samsung ranks second, with 89% of its devices equipped with the latest version of the Android system, while the remaining 7% are powered by Android Oreo.

Xiaomi ranks third with 84% of its phones equipped with Android Pay, while 9% are equipped with Android Oreo 8.1.

Huawei ranks fourth with 82% of its phones running Android Pay, 5% of its phones running Android Oreo 8.1 and 10% of its phones running Android Oreo 8.0.

Lenovo and Oppo have respectively 43% and 35% of phones running Android.

Vivo, LG and Alcatel have the worst track record, with respectively 18%, 16% and 14% of Android Pay devices.

The report shows that Nokia has updated about 50% of its phones shipped last year to the latest version of the Android system in six months.

No other company – with the exception of Xiaomi and Lenovo – has updated more than half of its phones with the latest version of Android, even 12 months after Android Pay.

This indicates that companies often publish updates of their expensive devices, but that their mid-range and low-end devices do not have the latest version of Android.

Peter Richardson, director of research at Counterpoint, said: "Android phone manufacturers do not talk enough about the importance of updates, which explains the low awareness of customers."

Operating system updates and security updates are one aspect of Android smartphones that are attracting relatively little attention. Given the low level of consumer awareness, these items are not among the top 10 features that consumers say they care more about.

The research firm notes that device manufacturers must redouble their efforts to provide regular software and security updates to their users.
