Former Mexican coach Javier Aguirre went to court in the Spanish city of Valencia after it was decided to reopen an investigation into the manipulation of the 2011 Spanish league match between Real Zaragoza and the Levante.
The Spanish "AS" newspaper has accused 42 people in handling the outcome of the match between Real Zaragoza and Levante, including former coach Javier Aguirre, who had coached Real Zaragoza at the time of the events.
Real Zaragoza had to beat Levante to avoid relegation to second division in the last round of the Spanish league in 2011.
The match ended in a 2-1 win for Real Zaragoza. Real Zaragoza was accused of bribing Levante players to manipulate the result and give Real Zaragoza the opportunity to win in order to avoid relegation.
According to information published in the Mexican press, Javier Aguirre and other people would be the subject of a new investigation after the opening of the case, under the insistence the Attorney General for the fight against corruption and the Association of Spanish clubs, in order to clarify the truth and to impose a full sentence to the accused. A term of imprisonment of up to four years, other than the penalty of football for total suspension of football or any related activity, up to a maximum of six years.
