Wael Ghoneim returns to the Egyptian scene with controversial videos

After years away from public life, Egyptian political activist Wael Ghoneim has reappeared through controversial videos posted on his Facebook page.

Wael, who now resides in the United States, appeared in what many considered shocking, after the shaved head, eyebrows and bare breasts, while it appeared fatigue and emotion.

In a video, Wael expressed his condolences for the wife of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who lost her husband and younger son Abdullah in the past three months. Wael also called on current Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to "kiss his hands".

Former President Morsi died in custody after falling in the dock at a trial in June. His youngest son, Abdullah, died earlier this month of a heart attack while driving in a Cairo street.

During the video clips, Wael called for the release of the prisoners and talked about some of the people imprisoned by name, such as economics researcher Omar al-Shaniti and former parliamentarian Ziad al-Alimi.

Shunaiti and Alami were part of a group arrested in June. The Egyptian Ministry of the Interior said at the time that this group had formed the "hope cell" and were running "Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated" enterprises banned by the Egyptian authorities and cooperating with the local authorities. leaders living abroad "to overthrow state institutions".

In his speech, Wael spoke to Egypt-based contractor Mohamed Ali, who recently released a series of social media videos in which he attacked President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and senior military officials accusing them of of corruption. Icon January Revolution

Wael Ghoneim, a computer engineer and former regional director of Google, was one of the highlights of the January 2011 revolution. This page made a significant contribution to the crowd on Tahrir Square on January 25th.

Wael was held for several days during the revolution to then go out and talk to a TV show for a local channel and break down in tears for the victims. Observers at the time said the interview helped stir up protest and build sympathy among protesters gathered in Tahrir Square.
