The five-member Football Federation committee, chaired by Amr Al-Janaini, officially announced the launch of the league's competition at its 61st edition, the 2019-2020 season, on 21 September.

Ahli and Zamalek are the most involved clubs in the history of the Egyptian league, where both teams have participated in all seasons of the tournament since the beginning of the 1948/49 season, followed by Egyptian and Al Ittihad from Alexandria, where they did not participate in two seasons.

Al Ahly is the Premier League champion with 41 titles, while Zamalek is second with only 12 titles.
