As the world battles the coronavirus outbreak, South Korea has revealed that dozens of people have died after being vaccinated against the flu virus as part of a government campaign.
While authorities around the world are asking, as winter approaches, to be vaccinated against the flu, in order to reduce the infection, because the symptoms of Covid-19 are similar to those of the flu.
But with South Korea announcing that at least 48 people died during the month of October after receiving the flu shot, public concern over the vaccine’s safety has grown.
Authorities rejected 5 million doses of the flu vaccine last September, after leaving them at room temperature.
Officials said they had not been able to find a direct link between the deaths and vaccine doses.
It should be noted that the influenza virus causes around 3,000 deaths each year in South Korea.
For his part, Pak Nyong, Minister of Health, said the benefits of getting the flu shot outweigh the side effects, and local experts as well as WHO experts agree.
The capital, Seoul, also urged citizens to get their flu shots as part of the free campaign, to reduce the infection as the country battles the Covid-19 epidemic.
About 1,500 elderly people died last year after being vaccinated against the flu, but the government has confirmed the deaths were unrelated to the vaccine.
In response, Singapore stopped using two influenza virus vaccines.
Singapore’s health ministry said on Sunday that no deaths had been detected from the flu vaccine, but it had stopped using both vaccines as a precaution.
Singapore’s health ministry is contacting South Korea for more information to determine whether the deaths were related to the flu shot or not.
Singapore’s health ministry said it will continue to use two more flu shots.
