Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have found that some patients with Corona suffer from long-term skin problems, which can last up to five months, despite the virus symptoms lasting only 12 days.
The American University researchers said the symptoms varied in severity, although they were generally mild. They include rashes, itchy chills, and swollen fingers, which researchers have called “Covid fingers.”
The results, presented at the EADV virtual conference on Thursday, come from studying data on nearly 1,000 long-standing coronavirus cases in 39 different countries. It may also help scientists understand the body’s inflammatory response to COVID-19 infection.
“The skin can provide a visual window into inflammation that can occur elsewhere in the body,” said Dr Esther Freeman, principal investigator of the project.
While most people recover from COVID-19 within weeks, there is growing evidence that it can be a long-term illness for some. At the moment, relatively little is known about these long-term effects, but this research complements previous findings indicating that corona may be a cyclical disease that travels through the body’s systems. It also appears that it may be years before the scale of the outbreak is known.
