On Tuesday, the Algerian presidency announced that the president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, had been infected with the new Corona virus.
She explained in a statement that Tebboune “continues to receive treatment in one of the German specialist hospitals, responds to treatment and her state of health is gradually improving, in accordance with the requirements of the health protocol”.
It should be noted that Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been transferred to Germany since last Wednesday for medical examinations, one day after announcing his transfer to the military hospital in the capital Algiers and having quarantined him.
On social media, Algerians are calling for real answers concerning the president’s health and for providing adequate medical information on his health and treatment.
It should be noted that Tebboune was elected less than a year ago when Algeria faced its biggest political crisis in decades with the formation of a mass protest movement calling for the replacement of the entire ruling class.
Tebboune, with military backing, lobbied for changes to the constitution as part of a strategy to turn the page on the unrest. But despite the approval of these amendments in Sunday’s referendum, the vote rate was very low, not exceeding 23.7%.
In addition, the president’s absence due to illness may slow Algeria’s efforts to implement economic reforms aimed at reducing reliance on declining energy revenues.
