For the first time in the history of observation, astrophysicists from Canada, the United States and China have been able to determine the source of mysterious rapid radio explosions in our galaxy. It turns out that magnetic stars generate them (they are a dense rotating remnant of explosive stars surrounded by strong magnetic fields).
In this context, the researchers reported in a study published in the journal Nature that the explosion of FRB, discovered in 2007, produced the magnetic star SGR 1935 + 2154, located on the opposite edge of the Milky Way. This glow only lasted for a millisecond, but produced more energy than the Sun in an entire century.
Astronomers initially speculated that the explosions caused the most powerful catastrophe in the universe, including the fusion of pairs of neutron stars or pulsars and black holes. But later this theory was not confirmed.
And in April of this year, scientists again recorded a rapid radio explosion in the same area of ​​the sky. During their observation, the researchers discovered that the source of the FRB 200 428 signal was a magnetic star present in our galaxy.
Commenting on the event, the astrophysicists said: “FRB 200 428 exploded due to the core collapse of the huge new star SGR 1935 + 2154, and the explosion reached us on April 20.” They added that all other signals were from other galaxies. The closest object was about 490 million light years away.
Astrophysicists have come to the conclusion that magnetic stars can produce most radio bursts, but another source for them is not excluded.
