A crisis looms on the horizon. Messi will have to give up his old salary for renewal

Barcelona presidential candidate Tony Frixa has revealed details of the club’s financial woes, stressing that the Blaugrana cannot afford current Argentinian Lionel Messi’s salary in the years to come.

In particular, Frixa confirmed that Barca would not be able to offer the Catalan captain his current salary when signing the extension contract with the club, and that Messi will therefore have to give up his former salary at Barcelona.

Fresca said: “We will not convince Messi, our aim is to determine the priorities of each party, what Barcelona want and what they want Lionel.”

He added: “Members cannot be fooled. The proposal that will be presented to it will not be the same as the one that will be presented to it now, because the incomes have dropped considerably and it will be necessary to find another formula.”

The future of Messi, whose contract with the club expires in the summer of 2021, in the “Camp Nou” stadium sparked much speculation last summer, since he announced his desire to leave, after the defeat humiliating Barcelona 8-2 against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final last season.

Press reports indicate that Barcelona’s debts currently stand at more than 100 million euros and that the administration intends to cut the team’s salaries due to the Corona virus crisis.

According to Catalan radio RAC1, the agreement is still far between the Barcelona administration and the players regarding the salary cuts, as the players believe that the best is to negotiate a salary cut with the new president and not with an administration temp worker.

The interim administration aims to postpone the payment of 30% of player salaries until next year, but the current problem is that there is a new salary payment due in January 2021 and that the club does not have the necessary funds, which may lead to it being declared bankrupt.

The club can unilaterally reduce the salaries of the players without returning them and coming to an agreement with them, but this solution will inevitably lead to the players going to the courts.
