Tokyo’s “Natsume” Specialty Clinic is working to restore dolls and other toys to what they were in the past, much to the delight of owners attached to them, such as Yuki Kato, who brought her doll.
“I thought I had no choice but to throw it away because it was worn out,” Cato, 24, told AFP. But I learned that there is a clinic that deals with this kind of problem. She added: “It may not be the same as it used to be.” But I came here hoping to see her better ”. Clinic founder Natsumi Hakuzaki said it provides treatments ranging from “eye surgery” to hair transplantation and suturing.
This young woman began making plush toys four years ago in her hometown in northern Sendai after working in a clothing store; Customers often asked if she could fix their beloved toys.
“These people see the plush toys as family members, partners, or close friends, not just objects,” Hakuzaki said. After fixing their plush toys, many of them hugged her or started crying. This experience inspired her to open a place offering special treatment. For the sheep-shaped plush animal “Yuki-chan”, Hakuzaki began the treatment by removing the filling and then washing it with a special soap, describing the process as a “spa” treatment.
The clinic carefully documents each step of the treatment and posts photos on the Internet so that the owners can follow the treatment closely.
Realizing how people can get attached to their stuffed animals, Hakuzaki considers it essential to treat toys as if they were alive.
The 34-year-old moved to Tokyo two years ago and now repairs 100 soft toys a month with five other “doctors”. Customers send toys that need attention from Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, and Great Britain, and some have had to wait up to a year for an appointment.
It takes about ten days to repair a doll or toy, and the clinic’s website includes photos of “sick” people who have recovered. There is only one other “clinic” for lint repair in Japan, which is in Osaka, and demand for its services is growing, despite prices ranging from 10,000 to 500,000 yen (95 to 4,800 dollars), depending on his situation.
