The results of a scientific study revealed that defective functions of the TP53 gene, responsible for stopping the growth and division of cells damaged or due to stress, is the main cause of cancer.

According to EurekAlert, scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in the United States studied 10,225 tissue samples representing 32 types of cancer cells and compared their DNA to 80,000 different mutations collected over thirty years. They found that patients who had mutations in the TP53 gene lived for a short time.
Researchers have found that in addition to the role of this gene in cancer development, there are 4 other genes that affect patient survival. The analysis showed that 91% of cancer cases studied by the researchers indicated a deficiency in both copies of the TP53 gene, which usually appears as a result of the repeat of the abnormal first copy.
The researchers point out that, thanks to the size of the samples they analyzed, the results of this study could become a key to innovate new methods and drugs to treat cancer.
