A great artistic leap made by the Egyptian artist Ahmed Malik with his participation in the Australian international film “The Guardian of Gold”, which participated in the previous session of the Venice Film Festival, and also participated in the competition for feature films at the El Gouna Film Festival in its fourth session, and has been widely hailed as the first international work by an artist. Modern Egyptian.
In an exclusive interview with “Al Arabiya.net”, Ahmed Malek spoke about his first experience in international cinema, how he was chosen and the difference between Arab and international cinema.
Ahmed Malik
** The movie “The Gold Ranger” was screened at the Venice Film Festival, so how did you react to it?
** At the Venice Film Festival, the film was screened with great success, which surprised us all, and received very high praise from the public and the participants, as well as from specialized sites and magazines and organs international press sites such as the “Variety” site and the “Hollywood Reporting” site, which are international sites specializing in film criticism and writing, and they liked them. They praised it and we were surprised that everyone wrote so positively.
* What about its presentation at the El Gouna Festival and the reaction?
** The show at El Gouna was very important to me as I like to see the depth of the idea among our audience whether they like the job or not, and it also had special interest as it will be shown to my colleagues and Egyptian and Arab filmmakers, and their opinion is of great concern to me.
* How did you get nominated for the movie, and is it true that the “Don’t Put out the Sun” series was the reason for your choice?
** It is known that the participation of any Arab actor in an international film is done by filming a performance video, and anyone who sees himself for the role takes a video and sends it, which means thousands of videos and experiences , then choices happen after the intense qualifiers, and I did and I participated among thousands, and for For the topic of the series “Don’t Put Out the Sun”, I really knew after choosing the role that the director asked me by name; Because he was looking on the Internet for Arab and Middle Eastern actors, then a scene appeared to him from the series “Do not put out the sun” with the big star Mervat Amin, and he confirmed to me later that he loved me even though he didn’t understand what I was saying in the scene.

* Tell us about the basic idea of the film and how you prepared for it?
** The film tells the story of the fall of a young Afghan named “Hanif” in one of the remote areas of the desert with a mysterious man looking to steal gold. It also deals with the case of the Australian Gold Rush, which began in the 90s of the 19th century.
The film is about the racism to which the Middle East is exposed, although the film is about the period of the 19th century.
I was ready to study the historical side of this stage in Australian history, as well as psychologically good for the human side of the character I play.
Ahmed Malik
* Is it true that you studied 3 languages to be able to play the character?
** Yes, it’s true. The character of “Hanif” is believed to speak 3 languages, the first is a Bacho language, which is the language of Afghanistan, and the second language is the language of the indigenous peoples of Australia. Each tribe in Australia has their own language, and we were filming in Western Australia, and the third language was English and she spoke a little bit of Arabic.
* What are your dreams in the world?
** I have really big dreams and hope I hope to make them come true, but I’m at the start now and still at the start of the journey, and to be frank I don’t have a lot of options to covet diversity and difference and choose as I do in my country, and with regret abroad they do not take into account the history of the local artist, I am for them without any credit, but in general I I’m lucky to have in my first international film a large area to reach the championship, according to some people.
Ahmed Malik
* Some have accused the film of being long and boring? What do you think and your overall assessment of the experience?
** The film in general is very satisfying for me, and in terms of idea and direction it does not oppose any of my beliefs, on the contrary, its beliefs and ideas suit me, as for the opinions of some and as the movie lengthens, that’s the director’s point of view, of course, and I respect all opposing and favorable opinions, and it’s the beauty of art that there is controversy and points of view , because art is not good or bad, and in general opinions differ, there are those who have seen the film for a long time, and there are those who have seen it well, and those who saw badly, and the important thing is that in my opinion I embodied my role in the best way and the audience is satisfied with my performance and the critics have praised B.
* Can you devote yourself to international cinema and quit Arab art if you are successful abroad?
** I don’t know the next steps, but I think about the present and focus on it a lot, and no one knows what fate has in store for me. In general, I am currently among the Arab works and of course I like to participate in international films, and I am during this period photographing Egyptian and Arab works, including the series “The Generation of the Strangers” With the dear director Mohamed Sami and the series “Investigation” as well as the series “Namira 2”
* After your experience of international cinema, what is the difference between the latter and Egyptian and Arab cinema?
** The most important thing that sets world cinema apart is the structure of the organization, accuracy of time and execution, but we also stand out in many artistic aspects such as international cinema, and these things include makeup, photography and graphics, and we have unique talents that are much stronger than the outdoors.
