Jordan Brothers backs off. The loss of 6 seats in Parliament

The organization of the Muslim Brotherhood continues to decline in Jordan. Preliminary results announced yesterday by the Independent Electoral Commission showed that the number of seats for the “National Alliance for Reform” led by the Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood and the largest opposition party important of the country, decreased to about 10 from the 16.

On the other hand, the results also showed the victory of about 30 former deputies and about 20 senior retired soldiers, with the continued influence of tribes and businessmen.

New faces

In a statement to the Al-Mamlaka state broadcaster, Political and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Musa Al-Maaytah said that “a large number of new names, between 98 and 100 people,” were coming to parliament for the first time.

It should be noted that one million and 387 thousand 673 voters voted on Tuesday in the elections in which the Islamic movement participated, candidates representing the main Jordanian tribes, independents and a number of leftists, in addition to a large number of ‘businessmen.

These elections saw a low turnout of 29.9%, compared to 36% in previous elections. 1,674 candidates, including 360 women, contested the 130 seats in the House of Representatives, of which 15 are reserved for women.

According to preliminary results, no woman won outside the quota, which allocates 15 seats to women, while there were 20 women MPs in the previous parliament.

It should be noted that the last legislative elections were held in Jordan in September 2016. The elected parliament is one of the two branches of the Jordanian National Assembly, which also includes the Senate, composed of 65 members appointed by the king.
