Al-Marsad Journal – Agencies: An elegant white silk and goatskin shoe that belonged to Marie-Antoinette, the last queen of France, executed during the French Revolution, will be auctioned on Sunday at a price starting at 10,000 euros (11,800 dollars).
Execution of the guillotine
The sale will take place at the Palace of Versailles where angry crowds surrounded the Queen and King Louis XVI before being executed by the guillotine in 1793.
The shoe has his name on its heel, and Jean-Pierre Ozina of the auction house responsible for the sale said he believed it was worn regularly during daily life at the palace.
“This auction comes at a time when the French face real doubts about their values, and many of them are clinging to the history of France.” And he continued: “Marie Antoinette is a personality that interests the whole world.”
Offer shoes for sale
The French house stressed that the shoe is one of the most important pieces offered in the auction entitled “The Royal at Versailles”, with a painting entitled “Molière at the table of the king of the sun” by the painter François-Jean Garnorey, and it is one of the rare paintings which shows King Louis XIV alongside the writer Molière (with a starting price of between 40,000 and 60,000 euros).
Warning
The figure of Queen Marie-Antoinette, of Austrian origin, executed with the guillotine in 1793, remains the center of attention.
In October 2019, an exhibition in Paris re-photographed the stages in the development of Marie-Antoinette’s incarnation in the arts through more than 200 works, including paintings, films, Japanese cartoons and dolls.
The prices are high
The length of the white shoe is 22.5cm, a third of which is covered in silk, while the back is made of goatskin, with a leather sole and four folded straps overlapping on the side.
Last May, a box in which Marie-Antoinette placed her things and a large napkin that she used during the coronation of her husband, King Louis XVI in 1775, obtained high prices at an auction also organized by the Ozna House.
