A ceremony in honor of the great Indian actor Sumitra Chatterjee took place on Monday, the day after his death at the age of 85 from complications related to the Covid-19 epidemic.
The Bollywood star has appeared in around 300 films over six decades, but is known internationally for her work with Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray.
He was transferred to a hospital in Calcutta after testing positive for COVID-19 last month and remained there because he suffered complications from the virus, according to local media.
His daughter, Bolamy Bose, wrote on Facebook that Chatterjee’s health had deteriorated and he died on Sunday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Chatterjee’s death was “a great loss for the world of cinema” and the cultural life of India.
“World, Indian and Bengali cinema has lost a giant. He will be sorely missed,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted.
In addition, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who was infected with the novel Corona virus earlier this year, wrote on Twitter that Chatterjee was “one of the strongest pillars” of the Indian film industry.
Chatterjee has participated in 14 of Rai’s films and first appeared in the third part of the famous “Apo” three.
In 2012, he received the “Dadasaheb Bhaalki” award, the most prestigious award in Indian cinema, and France awarded him the Legion of Honor three years ago.
Thousands of fans of the deceased gathered in Calcutta near the crematorium where his body was removed early Sunday, carrying candles and photos of the actor.
