The Dutch government announced on Friday that it would ban the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in consumer goods stores, starting in 2024, to encourage more people to quit smoking.

With the imposition of a ban on cigarette vending machines from 2022 and the addition of a ban on selling them in stores, the government said it would eliminate 11,000 out of 16,000 tobacco outlets currently available in the country.

The sale of cigarettes in consumer goods stores currently accounts for around 55 percent of tobacco sales in the Netherlands.

Since 2008, Dutch authorities have banned smoking in bars and restaurants and have also removed designated smoking areas at train stations this year, with buildings housing trade offices and businesses to follow by 2022.
