The Great Conjunction, December 21 … an astronomical phenomenon that has not happened for 800 years

Muhammad Ismail – Cairo – Books – Youssef Afifi:

The world is impatiently awaiting the occurrence of the great conjunction between the two giants (Jupiter and Saturn), which culminates on December 21, the day of the winter solstice, and as they are giants of the gas planets of the solar system, their conjunction will illuminate the sky that will overtake the brightest stars that night.

Ashraf Tadros, professor at the National Institute of Astronomical and Geophysical Research, said today in a statement that the illumination of these two giants when they approach them at a distance of only 0.1 degrees (i.e. 6 minutes d ‘arc) will dazzle everyone, which is a rare astronomical event that has not been seen for almost 800 years, and it will not happen again. Scene again in this image only in 2080.

He added that the last conjunction of these two planets was 20 years ago, more precisely in 2000, but that it was not possible to see it enough because they were very close to sunrise, and the (great conjunction) which preceded it was in 1226.
The astronomy teacher explained the meaning of conjunction, which is the approach of one celestial body to another celestial body when seen from the earth, which is an apparent angular approach which is not real, because for the real distance between the two bodies, it is very large, estimated at hundreds of millions or billions of kilometers.

He explained that conjugations are very common and occur throughout the year, for example the moon appears next to a number of planets or bright stars, or two or more planets are frequently combined, but the conjunction of two giant bright planets such as Jupiter and Saturn is very rare.

He stressed that observers won’t need binoculars or telescopes to see the large coupling, but if it is seen through the telescope, we will be able to see the four large moons of Jupiter (Europe – Io – Callisto – Ganymede ).

He advised astronomers and interested people to start following the gradual approach of the two great planets these days as they look southwest directly after sunset until around 6:30 p.m. Cairo time, indicating that this scene will be remarkable from December 17, when Saturn is to the left of Jupiter and until their full conjunction on December 21, where they switch places in the sky, so that Jupiter is to the left of Saturn, then follow their gradual separation from each other, which will be noticeable from December 25 until the end of the year until their separation becomes clear to the eye.
