Doctors have warned Russian citizens not to wear protective medical masks on the street in very cold weather.

Moscow AIDS Center epidemiologist Yelena Belova said in an interview with Russian “Novosti” agency that the face mask should only be worn in a place where crowds of people meet. In other places, it is not recommended to wear a mask, as it gets wet and cools down quickly.

She added that a person wears a muzzle to protect themselves from others, explaining, saying, “The muzzle does not warm the human body in times of extreme cold. It builds up on its inner side, which touches the face when we speak and breathe.

Professor and epidemiologist Nikolai Malyshev said that a wet mask is dangerous to human health wherever he wears it and loses its protective properties. He added: “The muzzle is not suitable for heating the respiratory system. If a person wants heat on the street, it is advisable to use a scarf or shawl for this purpose.”
