The mystery of the serial killer known as the “Zodiac” has baffled US authorities for 51 years, and its mention continues to terrify Californians, even those who were not contemporary in the 1960s.
Its story is considered one of the most famous detective stories in the United States.
Authorities charge him with five gruesome murders in the state and he claimed in his letters that his victims were at least 37. In any case, attempts to arrest him were unsuccessful and his case is still under investigation.
Whatever the Zodiac left behind a mysterious code, it was announced on Friday its decryption.
“I hope you will have a lot of fun trying to catch up with me (..) I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will soon send me to heaven because I now have enough slaves to serve me” , says Zodiac Code.
After 14 years of continuous work, American code-breaking expert David Oranchak succeeded in deciphering the code that a serial killer who called himself “Zodiac” was delivering in vague codes to the “San Francisco Chronicle” in 1969.
It had the code number 340, being 340 characters long, and it is one of a group of encrypted messages sent by the Zodiac killer to the media.
The expert, Uranchak, worked to solve the code with the help of two of his companions, one a mathematician in Australia Sam Blake, and the other a Belgian named Jarl Van Eyck.
In a letter to the Chronicle, FBI spokeswoman in San Francisco, Cameron Pollan, confirmed the validity of Oranchak’s claims about the code cracking.
“The zodiac killer’s case is still under investigation,” she said.
“The zodiac killer has terrorized several communities in Northern California, and despite decades,” Pollan continues, “we continue to seek justice for the victims of these brutal crimes.”
In 1969, a teacher and his wife managed to solve a code with number 408, in which Zodiac said, “I love to kill because it’s so fun.”
The Chronicle describes the Zodiac murders as “America’s most famous unsolved murder case.”
Uranchak shared a video clip on YouTube, detailing how he and his colleagues cracked the code that has baffled US authorities for decades.
According to Reuters, the case of the zodiac has inspired many story books and films, most notably “Dirty Harry”, starring Clint Eastwood, in 1971; And “Zodiac”, with Robert Downey Jr., in 2007.
Zodiac sent three different codes to American newspapers decades ago and said one of them had symbols indicating his name.
While the existence of the killer’s name has not been revealed in the two deciphered codes, hope remains to decipher the third and final code to determine the identity of the killer, who may not be alive. .
