From the moment the UAE-Israel deal was announced on normalizing relations, the issue became a matter of concern for social media users.
Several hashtags on the subject dominated Twitter in the Arab world in general and in the Gulf in particular.
On Thursday, the United Arab Emirates announced the normalization of relations with Israel and the latter’s suspension of annexation of Palestinian land, which sparked a storm of official and popular reactions around the world.
The hashtag “Israel” came first, followed by the hashtag “normalization is betrayal”, then “Gulf people against normalization”.
In several Gulf countries, tweets discussing the deal were circulated under hashtags in local forms, such as “Omanis against normalization” or “Kuwaitis against normalization”.
They were later followed by the hashtag “Turkey, 70 years of normalization”, after the Turkish president threatened to freeze relations with the Emirates. The tweeters attacked Erdogan and reminded him of good Turkish-Israeli diplomatic relations, and accused him of trading for the Palestinian cause.
Under the hashtag “Gulf Arabs Against Normalization,” the tweeters posted archival recordings and photos of King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz in which they mention his stance on Israel for nearly five decades.
Under the hashtag “Normalization is betrayal”, some have resorted to recalling some of the defining moments of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by posting iconic images like that of the child Muhammad al-Dura during the Second Intifada in 2000.
Others demanded that their children continue to be educated about Arab Palestine and not leave them ignorant in the future.
Another section posted photos of a protest in Al-Aqsa, in which flags and photos of the UAE’s crown prince, Mohammed, were burned between Zayed and banners condemning normalization.
