Many Arab countries are characterized by conditions of malnutrition, conflict, or a combination of both, but this has not always been the case. As in most developing countries, the period immediately following independence was an era of hope and relative prosperity. But imperialism did not sleep while these states developed and quickly intervened to destroy the post-independence gains.

The two great defeats and territorial losses inflicted on Israel in 1967 and 1973, as well as the other defeats that followed, left in their wake more than the destruction of property and the loss of human life: the Arab world lost its ideology of resistance. A reflection on the economic and social performance between the past and the present requires a correct and theoretically coherent explanation which moves away from the hallucinatory constructions of individual freedom and choice.
