The United Nations Social and Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) has warned that millions of people in the Arab world are at risk of contracting the coronavirus due to their lack of handwashing facilities, at a time when hundreds of new cases of the virus have been recorded in several Arab countries.
The UN committee said in a report published on its website today, Wednesday, that more than 74 million people in Arab countries do not have hand washing facilities and 87 million people in the area have no potable water. This increases the risk that they will contract the coronavirus.
ESCWA predicted that 26 million refugees in the Arab region would be at higher risk of contracting the coronavirus due to their lack of water, sanitation and hygiene services.
She said that the simple recommendation to wash your hands with soap and water to avoid transmission of the Corona virus is turning into a complicated issue in the Arab region.
ESCWA urged Arab governments to give the highest priority to providing safe drinking water and hand washing facilities in areas where such services are not available, and cautioned against using water deprivation as a weapon of war.
She said the new study was part of a series of studies to assess the impact of the coronavirus, which this UN committee is preparing to support Arab countries in their joint efforts to mitigate the effects of the epidemic.

Regarding the Corona epidemic in the Arab world, the Omani Ministry of Health has today recorded 97 new infections, bringing the number to 910.
Today, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health announced the recording of 50 infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of recorded infections in the country to 1,405, as the number of people recovering from the virus has risen. to 206.

In Bahrain, 161 new injuries were recorded, while the United Arab Emirates recorded 412 injuries, bringing the total to 4,933.
Reuters also reported that the government of the Emirate of Sharjah has decided to stop public transport between cities in the emirate until further notice.
In Morocco, one death from the virus and 100 new infections were recorded, bringing the total to 1988, including 127 deaths, while the number of people recovering rose to 218.
In Algeria, 87 new injuries were recorded, bringing the total to 2,070, in addition to 13 deaths, bringing the total to 326.
In Lebanon, the health ministry today announced the registration of 17 new cases of Coronavirus, bringing the total number of HIV infections in the country to 658, as the number of deaths stabilized at 21 deaths.

In Jordan, the government decided to allow some factories to resume operations, provided the necessary measures are taken to prevent the outbreak of the Corona virus, but it warned that the financial situation would be severely affected by the repercussions of the ‘epidemic.
And in the Palestinian territories, it was announced today that 3 new Coronavirus infections have been detected by nurses in Hebron and Ramallah, who work at Al Mutlaa Hospital in occupied Jerusalem, where the number of people infected rose to 78, while the total number of cases in the Palestinian territories rose to 369.
On Monday, Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh announced that his government had made some changes to the procedures used to combat the Corona virus, including allowing some factories to operate.
In Iraq, the governor of Karbala, Jassim Al-Khattabi, announced that the governorate would not allow the entry of citizens of countries infected with the coronavirus, unless the World Health Organization declares these countries free of the epidemic.
