For nearly half a century, famous American talk show host Larry King has conducted numerous interviews with American presidents, leaders and dictators around the world, but one of them, with a former Arab president, was “the worst of all,” as he described it.
In 2009, King, who died on Saturday, gave an interview to the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in which he asked him several embarrassing questions, including “Have you considered who will succeed you in the presidency?”
At that time, Kadhafi replied that he had left power in 1977, and that the people are now ruling the country, as they “work to lead the revolution”.
King also questioned Gaddafi about his biggest mistakes, and the late dictator replied that he made several mistakes, but he focused specifically on his earlier desire to produce a nuclear bomb before reversing it.
Two years after the famous interview, Larry himself appeared in a TV interview, during which the presenter asked him about his opinion of Gaddafi and in his interview.
Larry’s response was: “Gaddafi as a dictator is certainly among the worst in the world, but as someone you can interview he was the worst ever.”
Larry Gadhafi, who ruled Libya for more than 40 years, described him as an interesting person, but at the same time he had a strange thought and he expected his downfall about eight months before he was killed in October 2011.
King gave nearly 50,000 live interviews. In 1995, he attended a Middle East Peace Summit with Yasser Arafat, then PLO leader, King Hussein of Jordan as well, and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin at the time.
It has also hosted characters ranging from the Dalai Lama to Elizabeth Taylor, and from Mikhail Gorbashtov to Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Lady Gaga.
King boasted of not preparing for his interviews at all. His relaxed style comforted his guests and brought him closer to the crowd.
King won numerous awards, including two Peabody Awards, for his continued work on CNN from 1985 to 2010.
