A summit of Mount Lawz in the Tabuk region, 69 years ago, witnessed the crash of the British military plane “Vickers Valletta C.1”, which was heading from Baghdad to Cairo.
The height of the site where the plane crashed, according to the Today program broadcast on “Al-Ikhbariya” channel, is over two thousand meters. Tabuk area history researcher Abdullah Al-Amrani said this site was first recorded by Shaban in 1373 AH, the plane collided with the mountain.
Al-Amrani explains that the plane flew for unknown reasons on its way to Cairo over the al-Lawz Mountains, suggesting that the pilot may not have been familiar with the terrain in the area, as well as the flight was at night, only to find that he had a very high mountain in front of him, so he tried to get around it by hovering over it, except that the top of Jabal al-Lawz was much higher than the pilot had imagined, and the plane crashed into the mountain.
The historical researcher adds that the locals at that point heard the sound of an explosion, followed by a light shining on one of the peaks of Mount Lawz, and the next day 3 people went up to explore the material and found the wreckage of the aircraft, and the remains of its passengers were scattered around the crash site.
It was later discovered that the crashed plane was a military passenger plane, carrying 3 British pilots, including a woman, and a few days later a report was submitted to the High Commissioner about the crash, and the Britons were allowed to enter the crash site to remove the rubble and bury the dead who lost their lives in the crash.
