American singer Demi Lovato said she had three strokes and a heart attack after overdosing on drugs in 2018, and that doctors told her she was close to death.
“My doctors said I only had 5-10 minutes,” the 28-year-old American pop star said in a new documentary.
Lovato told reporters that she suffered brain damage and is still feeling the effects.
She revealed that these effects include a state of blurred vision, which means she cannot drive and makes reading difficult for her.
The former star was hospitalized in July 2018 after being found unconscious at her Los Angeles home.
The announcement of the fentanyl-filled opioid overdose came a month after she revealed she had returned to drug use after a six-year hiatus.
“I’ve lived many lives, like a cat,” she says in the trailer for her new YouTube documentary series, “Dancing with the Devil,” and now I’m in my ninth life.
In her interview with reporters on Wednesday, she revealed the permanent effects she was suffering from. “I don’t drive because I have blind spots in my eyes,” she says.
“For a long time, I had difficulty reading. When I was able to read a book, after two months, it was a huge achievement, because my vision was very blurry, ”she added.
She said she was releasing the documentary “to help people who have walked the same path as me,” adding, “I wanted to set the record straight, and I wanted to reveal everything to my fans.”
Lovato was an actress as a child and appeared in the Barney & Friends series, which was widely recognized on the Disney Channel as a teenager.
She starred in the very popular Camp Rock film series, before successfully starting her solo music career.
She has released six albums and appeared as a judge on the US version of X Factor.
Lovato has been open about her mental health issues and addictions throughout her career.
In a documentary produced in 2012, she spoke of her “daily struggle” with eating disorders, self-harm and mental health issues, in addition to addiction.
She spoke about the extent of her drug use during her teenage years in another documentary in 2017.
“One of the main reasons I’ve improved is that I shouldn’t have to live this life anymore,” said Lovato.
Lovato relaunched her singing career at the Grammy Awards last year and also sang the national anthem in the 2020 NFL Super Bowl Finals.
Last month, she sang on a television special to mark the inauguration of US President Joe Biden.
His documentary, “Dancing with the Devil,” is scheduled for release on YouTube on March 23.
