“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have assured Her Majesty The Queen that they will not return as active members of the royal family,” the palace said in a statement on Friday.
“While everyone is sad about their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family,” he added.
Harry and Meghan, who have announced they are expecting their second child, senior royals, were shocked last year when they announced plans to step down from their royal roles.
Just days before Harry and Meghan appeared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the palace said the couple’s honorary military appointments and their royal patronage would be returned to the Queen.
A spokesperson for the couple confirmed that they remain committed to the service.
“As evidenced by their work over the past year, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service in the UK and around the world, and they have offered their continued support to the organizations that ‘they represent, whatever their official role, “he added.
Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties in January 2020 and moved with their first son Archie to southern California for a more independent life away from the British media after Archie was born in 2019.
