John giedert
John Giedert, who coached the women’s gymnastics team for the 2012 US Olympics, was found dead on Thursday after being charged with 24 crimes related to the mistreatment of young gymnasts.
The 63-year-old was facing charges of human trafficking, criminal sexual behavior and lying, according to a statement released by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who was due to surrender and be tried Thursday after- midday.
“My office has been informed that the body of John Giedert was found late this afternoon after his suicide,” Nessel added in a statement.
“It is alleged that John Giedert used force, fraud and coercion against young athletes who came to his home to train in gymnastics, for financial benefit to him … The victims are suffering an eating disorder including bulimia, anorexia, suicide attempts, self-harm, excessive physical conditioning and frequent coercion. “Performance even in the event of injury, severe emotional abuse and physical assault, including sexual assault.”
CNN has obtained a copy of the complaint, which says the alleged crimes extend from 2008 to 2016.
A press release issued by the Michigan attorney general’s office said Giedert was involved in verbal, physical and sexual assaults against several young women.
Giedert was facing charges of human trafficking, forced labor, first and second-rate criminal sexual behavior, and lying to an officer during a violent crime investigation.
Giedert was the former owner of the famous “Twistars” gymnastics club in Michigan, knowing that he had sold the club’s property in 2018.
