As some merchants in Egypt began to display Ramadan products, both lanterns and decorations, Barakat Safa, vice president of the Gifts division at the Chamber of Commerce, explains in statements to Sky News Arabia the dimensions of the ongoing crisis since last year and its impact on manufacturers and traders.

Safa pointed out that this year was only 30% of the annual production of manufactured lanterns, as the stock is still in surplus compared to last year, around 70%, especially since the previous season took place during the prohibition period and that the sales movement has stopped. dramatically.

He said: “Last year’s stock still covers the market, and a small part was made this year, because the market movement is very weak in the current period, like last Ramadan.”

He added: “It is true that the goods available are not in huge quantities, but at the same time they coincide with Iqbal, not with the usual force under normal conditions before the Corona pandemic.”

According to the deputy head of the Gifts Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, “During the peak period of Corona last year, 2020, the shawls were closed due to precautionary measures, and as a result, the manufacturers and traders were unable to sell most of their wares … while this year there is no closing. The season of the Prophet’s birthday, and therefore, we hope to install the Ramadan lanterns as usual.

Safa says that “Ramadan lanterns have started to spread at wholesale fairs since the beginning of the month of Rajab, and we hope that the shawadr (for retail to consumers) will take place in the middle of next month of Sha ‘ban.

He said Ramadan lanterns are 100 percent made in Egypt, after the importation was stopped by a government decision, seeing them as a “heritage” product.

And the vice president of the Gifts Division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce added: “It is true that there is no importation of Ramadan lanterns or toys related to the month of Ramadan, and even of manufacturing materials associated with Ramadan, but there are some games that are imported, then songs are converted later in Egyptian factories, including Ramadan songs, similar to Wahwi Ya, Hawi and others, changing the cylinder to adapt it to the atmosphere of Ramadan, especially since lanterns are strictly prohibited.

Regarding the prices of Ramadan lanterns this year and the extent to which they are affected by the losses traders suffered last year with the lack of demand, Safa reveals that the prices – and in view of these conditions which everyone world is suffering – will continue at the same levels, and possibly decrease slightly. He added: “So far there is no boom … We hope that the market will develop positively in the coming period.”

“If the lantern season of Ramadan is successful,” continues the manager of the hall, “it will be an indication of the resumption and success of the seasons to come, whether the children are playing or otherwise … because the seasons are delivered as one said.”

In his statements to “Sky News Arabia”, Safa confirmed that traders and manufacturers suffered huge losses last year, saying: “All industries for Ramadan have suffered tremendous damage.”
