Houthi military spokesman in Yemen Yahya Saree announced Monday that drones had targeted Abha International Airport and King Khalid Air Base in the southern Saudi Arabian town of Khamis Mushait .
Saree said in a tweet on Twitter that “this targeting is part of our natural and legitimate right to respond to crimes of aggression and its continued siege on our country.”
The Houthi channel “Al Masirah” quoted the spokesperson as saying: “The Air Force was able to carry out an attack on military targets at Abha International Airport and King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, with three 2K bomber drones, and the shot was precise. “
Yemeni private news agency Al-Naba said in a tweet that “violent explosions” were heard in the Saudi town of Khamis Mushait after drones targeted their sites.
Saudi media did not report the attack immediately after it took place, and “Al-Arabiya” channel said on Twitter at around the same time that the internationally recognized Yemeni government armed forces had killed a prominent Houthi leader in Hajjah governorate, northwest Yemen.
The Arab channel correspondent also reported that warplanes of the Saudi-led coalition bombed a missile warehouse belonging to rebels in the province.
The Houthis have stepped up their attacks on Saudi targets, which they say are part of a new strategy, in light of several incidents this month alone.
They also stepped up military operations in Taiz governorate in southwest Yemen during their six-year conflict with pro-government forces backed by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, escalated “heavy fighting” in central Marib province, and reports said their Saudi-backed opponents took control of a main roadblock on the 14th. March.
“Positive” remarks
On the other hand, Muhammad Ali Al-Houthi, a leader of the Houthi movement, called US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s statements regarding support for Yemen and its lack of foreign influence “positive.”
He added that the United States should support their intentions by ending its participation in the military operations of the Saudi-led coalition against its movement.
Ned Price, a State Department spokesman, said Blinken told UN special envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths on Sunday that Washington intends to revive diplomatic efforts, in cooperation with the United Nations and others, to end the war in Yemen.
“He (Blinken) stressed that the United States supports a united, stable Yemen free from foreign influence, and that there is no military solution to the conflict,” Price added in a statement.
A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 after the Iranian-backed Houthi movement ousted the country’s government from the capital, Sana’a.
