A new study has found that people with insomnia or exhaustion are more likely to contract Covid-19, according to the British Daily Mail “Daily Mail”.
Researchers have found that every additional hour of sleep reduces the risk of coronavirus infection by 12% and that those who experience fatigue every day are more than twice as likely to contract the virus.
The team of researchers from the “Bloomberg” School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, suggests that these conditions weaken the immune system, which increases susceptibility to diseases such as Covid-19.
Previous research has established that insufficient sleep and fatigue at work are associated with an increased risk of viral and bacterial infections.
But the team of researchers said it was not clear whether these factors were also linked to an increased risk of developing Covid-19.

For the new study, published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health, researchers analyzed the results of a survey of healthcare workers, who had been repeatedly exposed to patients with coronavirus.
A survey was carried out, which ran from July 17 to September 25, 2020, with the participation of healthcare workers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. The survey included questions on details related to lifestyle, health, hours of sleep and fatigue from work.
The effect of insomnia on virus infection
Insomnia
Out of a total of 2,884 respondents, 568 reported having had COVID-19 in the past.
Researchers found that about 24%, or one in four people with Covid-19, had difficulty sleeping at night, compared to 21%, or one in five, who were not infected.
The effect of fatigue on viral infection
Exhaustion
About 5.5% of healthcare workers who contracted Covid-19 reported experiencing fatigue on a daily basis, compared with 3% of workers without infection.
The results showed that those who suffered from recurrent fatigue were three times more likely, besides being seriously injured, compared to workers who contracted the disease but did not suffer from recurrent fatigue.
It was also proven that 18.2% of workers who were not infected with Corona infection were not subject to fatigue at all, compared to 13.7% of those who worked long, exhausting hours.
Although the biological factors behind the increase in insomnia and fatigue due to the risk of corona infection are still unclear, researchers suggest that both conditions weaken the immune system, which in turn increases symptoms. risks of infection with Covid-19.
Well-being of members of the health sector
“These studies indicated that fatigue can directly or indirectly predict illnesses due to work stress that weakens the immune system and alters cortisol levels,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers added that a lack of sleep at night, severe insomnia and a high level of fatigue could be risk factors for Covid-19 infection in healthcare workers. Therefore, the study results underscore the importance of the well-being of frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic.
